Not so long ago, televangelist Pat Robertson shocked Americans by cheerfully recommending that the CIA should put a bullet in Hugo Chavez. Not exactly a “what would Jesus do?” sort of moment. Well, this weekend’s referendum on Venezuela’s constitution has apparently done the CIA’s job for them. The voters of this little South American country soundly rejected Chavez’s proposed amendments designed to prolong his reign and increase his powers. And he took it like a man. The best part is—I hope Pat is paying attention—it didn’t take an US invasion, CIA plot or military coup. Just old-fashioned democracy. Something Hugo Chavez has always claimed to believe in. And judging from his compliant reaction—it would appear he actually may.
