Maureen Dowd’s column on the upcoming Democratic Convention weaves a Shakespearen tale of ambition, betrayal and intrigue. Maybe she has it right. Or maybe she doesn’t. I recently saw a documentary film called 1968 which deftly cobbled together news footage from every month of that year. The parallels were eery. A divided America, an unpopular Texan president, an unwinnable war and Russian tanks invading an Eastern Bloc country. The only parallel to 2008 we’ve yet to witness is a bloody, out-of-control Democratic Convention. But we certainly have all the ingredients, don’t we?
