It was his first televised press conference. Obama was poised, forceful and hard-charging. He answered questions with an uncanny level of depth and candor. His cool guided him like a Vedi Knight. Then he called on Helen Thomas. He seemed rattled. Was it her question about the Taliban or was it the gravitas of her person? She sits there on the front row. Proud. Unmovable. She has withstood Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan  two Bushes and a two-term Clinton. Her presence is the constant reminder: Presidents come and go. Helen abides.

  1. I guess that is a homers view of Obama’s press conference. My view- we are in deep trouble. I would compare our situation with the Great Depression though- just like Hoover and Rosevelt we have another round of the market intervening Presidents who will extend the misery and blame it all on the “free market”.
It was actually the Jedi Knight mind trick of turning a spending bill into a “stimulus” and a governmetal invasion into a “rescue”. May the force be with you.

  2. I guess the Jedi mind tricks didn’t work on the markets either, must have been the poised, forceful coolness. Of course, some stocks went up but thats how it works in a Banana Republic where it matters not how good your product is to the consumer but what your political connection is to those in power.

  3. With todays announcement by Geitner and last nights press conference the Obama administration has assured failure. They are facing this issue as an “illiquidity problem” when the real problem is a “insolventcy problem”. Two weeks into a presidency and he has gauranteed his own failure.
