It is deplorable when members of one political party simply would ignore the US constitution and try to advance their  extreme social agenda. I am sure the Tea Partyists would be up in arms over this affront to liberty if it weren’t for one little fact: the party in question is the Republicans. The Wall Street Journal remarks:

The 14th Amendment was enacted to ensure civil rights to slaves, but in modern times it also applies to the children born to illegal immigrants residing in the United States.

South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham said last week that he could offer a constitutional amendment to end birthright citizenship, which he called “a mistake” and that the Constitution should be changed to reflect that “if you come here illegally and you have a child, that child’s automatically not a citizen.”

  1. I have no love whatsoever for either Graham or his buddy McCain, but a “strict constitutionalist’ changes the Constitution by amendment, as prescribed in the Constitution itself. If they had argued that the Supreme Court should reinterpret the 14th Amendment in a new way to exclude birthright citizenship then you would have a point. The better point would be that they support he Patriot Act, both Wars, Wall street bailouts, etc, all these make them “strict constitutionalist?”
